Job Description


This position supports the commodities business unit by using product expertise in negotiations. The incumbent is responsible for establishing and managing the relationship and expectations of current and potential customers. Responsibilities include achieving revenue and contribution goals by developing rail solutions for customers that benefit KCS and optimize the customer’s supply chain. Contribute to the overall market strategy, profitability and direction for the commodities assigned.



Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business or related field, or commensurate experience required.


Minimum 2 years of experience in one or more of the following: sales, rail, logistics or commodities preferred

Previous work with commodities preferred.


Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate in Spanish preferred.

Financial acumen to include profit/loss experience.

Advanced Computer skills, proficient using Microsoft Office.

Strong analytical skills and ability to negotiate basic agreements.

Good organizational skills and the ability to focus on detail-oriented information.

Ability to collaborate across internal departments.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.


Manage customer relationships by actively creating solutions to best meet their business needs.

Negotiates with assigned customers.

Serves as the main contact for assigned customers.

Works with manager to establish strategy for markets for which they are responsible; develops account strategies and plans.

Maintains direct communication with other departments to establish equipment economics and pricing parameters and strategies.

Works with manager for planning, oversight and analysis of revenue and contribution and for forecasting and market outlook for area of responsibility.

Works to optimize market share and total contribution.

Maintain direct channel of communication with other KCS departments to insure marketing and sales plans and goals are aligned with other departments.

Handles all business development activities within business unit.

Acts as part of escalation path for revenue management to correct missing rates or rates in error.

Collects data and summarizes financial information for staff meetings.

Responds to daily quote requests and inquiries for rates.

Determines requirements and other information needed in order to generate and publish a rate quote; Creates appropriate support documentation.
